I should also point out that Flight 103 was not the only terrorist attack to hit Pan Am, as there was also Flight 830 in Hawaii (which was also bombed) and more famously, Flight 73, a hijacking in Pakistan. Those incidents soured Pan Am's rep pretty badly, and Flight 103 was pretty much the final nail in the coffin.

I live in Morden Manitoba in Canada. We used to have a station from 1905 where it was built until somewhere in the 1960s when it was closed down probably due to road traffic. It’s later moved from what today is a Giant Tiger grocery store, to the Pembina Threshermen’s Museum in 1972 where it’s still there to this day and freight trains still run on them running by Boundary Trails Railway Company and Canadian pacific.

On the topic of train derailing after hitting an animal, on the 28th of April 2008 and ICE hit a flock of sheep, derailing, and sliding derailed into a tunnel, some of the cars would have tilted over if not for the tunnel wall. And if you now take a second to think what would have been if the flock of sheep would have been hit a bit earlier and the train would have tilted enough before entering the tunnel and instead slamming into the portal of the tunnel..... yeah.....

I was able to ride on a Conrail B36-7 as a kid and i loved it, Hopefully i can ride a locomotive again as my dad worked for conrail (now csx) and thats how i was able to ride a b36-7.

A close relative of mine flew that flight just a couple of weeks prior so this event is a bit personal. What a pointless act. I remember hearing an interview with someone who had been on the connecting flight out of Germany. She described one gleeful young girl who was near her on the flight and who brought joy to her fellow passengers. The girl was on the onward flight to New York. As the woman put it, "You didn't deserve this."

At least here in the United States most people know to stand clear of the railroad tracks. Thankfully. 🚂😊

The problem with stringing wires over the tracks is that it’s almost unimaginably expensive both in initial cost as well as maintenance. Just ask the Great Northern Railway or the Milwaukee Road, both of which had electrified track in the western United States.
